Realise your dreams with one small step

Recently I wrote about the power of self-limiting beliefs and if you haven’t read that post yet I hope you will now. Breaking the bonds of (some of) my own self-limiting beliefs has given me a whole new perspective on my life and my goals. As a result I have started my own freelance writing business.

When people are faced with the opportunity to make a life changing decision a whole raft of common self-limiting beliefs can take hold. You might believe it’s too late for you to start something new. You might believe there is no point starting something if success is not guaranteed (or at least highly likely). You might not believe you are up to the task: it is too challenging and will take too long to achieve.

But you don’t have to believe these things.

Believe that right now you can take one small step towards your dreams.

.

All you really need do to start out on a path that may change your life is take a single step, then another and another.

Make one small change, then follow it with another. Tackle one problem at a time. Don’t worry about what might happen. Wait until it does. If you have many tasks in front of you, just do them one at a time. Look for the next thing that needs doing and do it. Repeat that again and again.

That’s it. Do one thing and see what happens. If you feel good, do another. Don’t try to go any faster. Don’t rush ahead in a burst of enthusiasm and crash into a wall of problems and exhaustion.

Believe that when you take that first small step, with purpose and determination, you will make things happen.

.

Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.

Believe that if you focus on just small steps, and if you have faith in the journey you have chosen, you will reach your destination.

  1. Hi Scott,

I’m afraid I can’t provide any advice myself but you could check out the u.colitis forum on healingwell.com

I find active forums like this a great way to exchange information with other IBDers, the kind of practical information that you don’t necessarily get in brochures from your doctor.

Wishing you well and hope to see you back here again soon.

  2. I was watching a (repeat) of an interview with Miriam Margolyes last night (transcipt at http://www.abc.net.au/tv/enoughrope/transcripts/s2260646.htm). A more vibrant and outspoken woman I have never seen – she has done many amazing things in her life and surmounted many hardships. Now, as she gets older, she says she wants to ‘do good stuff and tell the truth and be brave’.

Brave people like you and Miriam are such an inspiration. You help the rest of us to take those small steps, and recognise the validity of our dreams. So, thank you :)

  3. Why thank you!

I saw this interview myself and thought it was fantastic – she seems so present in the moment, sucking the ‘juice’ out of life and not bothering to pretend for the sake of social graces. I suspect that a number of rebellious thoughts I have had this week may be attributed to her influence!
